A bipartisan effort in Congress could overturn an unprecedented executive order which stripped away collective bargaining rights from hundreds of thousands of Americans.
A considerable bipartisan cohort of Congress introduced the Protect America’s Workforce Act (H.R. 2550 ). The bill would reverse provisions of a Mar. 27 executive order that eliminated the right to organize for hundreds of thousands of federal workers in more than 30 agencies.
On Mar. 27, President Trump signed “Exclusions from Federal Labor-Management Relations Programs” which stripped away the collective bargaining rights of 67% of federal workers, citing issues of national security. Lutheran social teaching affirms that public service is a worthy calling, and that all who are in government service should be treated equitably and with respect. The intervening policy of the bipartisan Protect America’s Workforce Act is needed to prevent the executive order from standing and stripping away the rights of these workers in the United States. Implications for unions in other sectors loom. In employment negotiations, “Because employees often are vulnerable and lack power in such negotiations, they may need to organize in their quest for human dignity and justice. When this occurs, accurate information and fair tactics are expected of all parties involved,” states the ELCA social statement Sufficient, Sustainable Livelihood for All.
