Witness for Creation

Witness for Creation events will take place during the Season of Creation, starting with the Rev. Amy E. Reumann at a press event in D.C. on Sept. 2, organized through Creation Justice Ministries. Faith gatherings highlighting urgent environmental concerns through ritual, testimony and prayer will occur in key states and D.C. during this period of global celebration spanning the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation (Sept. 1) through the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi (Oct. 4). RSVP for Sept. 2 event and more info at https://www.creationjustice.org/witnessforcreation.html.

BIG IMPACTS

1 in 6 Nevadans — nearly half a million people — rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to put food on the table.

Trump’s recently signed “Big Beautiful Bill” threatens to take that daily bread away from thousands of families in our state.

  • Over 265,000 Nevada families could lose all or part of their SNAP benefits.
  • 85,000 families may see monthly cuts of at least $25.
  • Refugees, parolees, and asylum seekers — about 10,500 Nevadans — will lose eligibility.
  • Nevada may be forced to cover $50–150 million more annually, creating new strain on state resources.

This isn’t just about numbers. This is about children going to school hungry, seniors choosing between food and medicine, and families already struggling being pushed deeper into crisis.

As Lutherans, we pray “Give us this day our daily bread.” That prayer calls us to act so all may share in God’s abundance.

LEAN will continue to advocate for food justice in Nevada and ensure our communities are not abandoned in the name of politics.

ACTION ALERT: Urge U.S. House to Support WIC Funding

WIC Funding in Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Appropriations

On August 1, 2025, the Senate, by an overwhelming vote of 87-9, advanced bipartisan legislation that provides $8.2 billion for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), a $500 million increase from FY 2025 to meet anticipated participation, while safeguarding the cash value benefit (CVB) that allows WIC participants to purchase fruits and vegetables. The legislation continues the nearly 30-year bipartisan commitment for the program. See FRAC’s statement.

What is WIC?

WIC provides free, healthy foods and personalized nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to other services. From the moment a mother finds out she’s expecting until the child turns 5, WIC provides extra support to help keep her family healthy. WIC uses Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, which work just like a debit card. Participants can also save time with virtual appointments in many locations.

Take Action

Looking for ideas for August Recess? Use the FRAC Action Network to easily send a pre-populated email, or craft your own, to urge your House Members to speak out and support the WIC funding in the Senate-passed appropriations bill — a level expected to ensure that all those who apply can participate in WIC and receive the full CVB benefits.
