Women’s Equality Day

Today is recognized as Women’s Equality Day, marking the anniversary of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote.

But we know the work is not finished. Women—especially women of color—continue to face wage gaps, barriers to healthcare, housing insecurity, and underrepresentation in leadership.

At LEAN, we believe equality means more than words on paper. It means action toward justice, equity, and dignity for all women in Nevada.

✊ Let’s honor Women’s Equality Day not only by remembering the past, but by committing to a more equal future.

Interim session = preparation for 2027.

LEAN is tracking:

  • Housing affordability
  • Healthcare access
  • Voting rights
  • Tribal sovereignty
  • Language access
  • Criminal justice reform

This is when the groundwork for new laws is laid. Let’s stay engaged, Nevada Lutherans.

Big Win for Nevada! AB 461 PASSED

AB 461 is now law in Nevada! This bill strengthens protections for older adults and people with disabilities by ensuring better education on long-term care planning and studying improvements to Nevada’s guardianship system. LEAN celebrates this as a win for dignity, justice, and compassionate care.

What AB 461 Does:

  • Establishes a public education program to help Nevadans understand their options for long-term care planning.
  • Requests the Guardianship Commission to study and recommend improvements to the state’s guardianship system, ensuring that vulnerable Nevadans are treated with dignity and safeguarded from harm.

At Lutheran Engagement and Advocacy in Nevada (LEAN), we see this as a faithful step forward. Our Lutheran tradition teaches that every person is a beloved child of God, deserving of compassion and justice. AB 461 helps families prepare for the future while working to protect those who may be overlooked or exploited.

This is advocacy in action—working together so that Nevada’s elders and neighbors with disabilities are valued and supported.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” —Galatians 6:2

Out of Reach

In Nevada, the math just doesn’t add up:

  • To afford a 2-bedroom apartment, you need to earn $33.63/hr
  • For a 1-bedroom, it’s $28.17/hr

But average wages in our state fall far short:

  • Black men: $21.25/hr
  • Black women: $22.60/hr
  • Latino men: $19.95/hr
  • Latino women: $22.23/hr
  • White men: $25.31/hr
  • White women: $30.53/hr

High rents + insufficient wages = a housing crisis.

Nevada families shouldn’t have to choose between rent, food, or medicine. It’s time for policies that ensure fair wages and affordable housing for all.

Are wages keeping pace with the cost of housing in your community?
