Protect SNAP—Protect Nevada’s Future

Every Nevadan deserves consistent access to nutritious food. Food access is not a privilege, it is a fundamental human right. Yet, proposed changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act threaten this right for hundreds of thousands of Nevadans.

We cannot stand by while this vital support system is at risk. Nor can we accept a future where our vision of a strong, healthy Nevada, where every person has the opportunity to thrive, is compromised.

These proposed changes aren’t just numbers on a page. They represent real harm to our neighbors. If passed, Nevada would be forced to either:

  • Find $170 million each year to maintain current SNAP benefits,
  • Or drastically reduce access and benefits, creating a devastating gap in our state’s food safety net.

Neither option is acceptable.

  • 1 in 6 Nevadans rely on SNAP.
  • Our enrollment rate is higher than all but five other states.
  • 62% of Nevada’s SNAP recipients are children.
  • 1 in 5 children in Nevada experiences food insecurity, according to Feeding America.

SNAP isn’t just efficient, it’s essential. For every meal a food bank provides, SNAP can provide nine. Cutting SNAP won’t just hurt families, it will overwhelm our food banks and community organizations already stretched thin.

Moreover, SNAP is not only a moral imperative but a smart investment: every $1 in SNAP benefits generates about $1.80 in local economic activity.

What You Can Do:
Contact Nevada’s U.S. Senators today and respectfully urge them to reject any proposal that cuts or undermines SNAP. Protecting this lifeline is critical to the health, dignity, and stability of our communities.

Together, we can uphold the values of compassion, equity, and care—and ensure no Nevadan goes hungry.

SFSP, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is administered by the Nevada Department of Agriculture, provides nutritious meals to children during the summer when free and reduced-price school meals are typically unavailable. Free meals will be made available to children 18 years of age and under.  Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who also participate in a public or private non-profit school program during the regular school year may receive free meals as well. SFSP sites will also provide children access to restrooms and potable water. Due to SFSP federal regulations, meals must be consumed on-site.

#EmptyPlatesProtest: Start your fast today!

National Relay Fast to Protest Massive Cuts to Health Care, Food Assistance, and other Basic Needs

Urgent Action Needed!

Hungry For Justice. Millions of people could lose food assistance if the Senate passes its budget bill that includes devasting cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), our nation’s first line of defense against hunger. Senate Leader Thune (R-SD) intends to move the bill this week.

SNAP not only supports vulnerable children, older adults, and working families, it also boosts local economies. Cuts to SNAP will deepen food insecurity, raise healthcare costs, and strain states and municipalities, all to fund tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy.  We’re going hungry to prevent millions of Americans from going hungry, losing healthcare, and paying more for basic needs due to devastating cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, the Child Tax Credit and other basic needs in the budget reconciliation bill.

Join Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) and other national organizations in a protest fast (started June 23), to stand in solidarity with the millions of people who could lose access to food assistance, health care, and other basic needs.

  1. Join the #EmptyPlatesProtest
  2. Fast for 24 hours any day between June 23 and July 4, 2025.
  3. Tell your Senator to reject budget reconciliation bill cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, Child Tax Credit.
  4. Use the FRAC Action Network to send a message directly to your Senators urging them to oppose any cuts to SNAP and to vote “No” on this harmful bill that would increase hunger.
  5. Invite a friend to do the same.

The national relay fast will continue until Congress breaks for the July 4th recess.

*If you can’t fast for 24 hours, pledge to skip a meal or two in solidarity with the millions who won’t have food on the table or health coverage.
