Why it matters
Nevada’s lieutenant governor is first in the line of succession if the governor dies, resigns, is removed, or is permanently unable to serve. The lieutenant governor also presides over the state Senate during legislative sessions. Although the role is largely procedural, the lieutenant governor may cast a vote to break a tied Senate vote.

The office also has responsibilities beyond the Legislature. The lieutenant governor chairs the Nevada Commission on Tourism and serves on state boards and commissions, helping shape decisions involving tourism, economic development, transportation, education, and other statewide concerns.
Nevada elects its lieutenant governor separately from its governor, so the two officials may belong to different political parties. The officeholder may serve up to two four-year terms. Though often described as part-time, the position can become especially consequential during a gubernatorial vacancy or closely divided Senate vote. Nevada Legislature, Nevada Revised Statutes.
