LEAN INTO 2026: Attorney General

Why It Matters

Nevada’s attorney general is the state’s chief legal officer. The attorney general represents the people of Nevada in civil and criminal matters before state and federal courts, advises state agencies and officials, and helps enforce state laws.

Much of this work is carried out by deputy attorneys general with specialized expertise. The office may also assist county, local and national law-enforcement agencies with investigations and court cases.

The attorney general’s office includes divisions that focus on consumer protection, Medicaid and insurance fraud, public safety and other areas of state law. The office also represents Nevada in major multistate lawsuits and settlements, decisions that can affect consumer protections, environmental standards, health care, civil rights and the state budget.

The attorney general is elected statewide to a four-year term and may serve no more than two terms. With roughly 400 employees, the office has significant influence over how Nevada’s laws are interpreted, enforced and defended.
