The Process Works

On the first day of early voting, my partner and I went to vote together. We had both recently moved, so we came prepared. I brought an important document because my new address did not match the one on my driver’s license. My partner brought his supporting document.

We first stopped at the Washoe County Public Library. It was busy with people voting, and after he cast his vote. We then headed to the Carson City Community Center. There, we found music, donuts, and a joyful welcome at the polls.

When I went in to vote, I didn’t need the documents I had brought. There was a question about my signature, so I showed my identification and was able to vote. The process was simple. I felt safe, and most importantly the system worked.

No matter what claims or spin we hear during this election, my experience reminded me that our election system works and that people are working hard to help every eligible voter cast a ballot.

I invite Lutherans across Nevada to pray for our siblings carrying out their civic duty. We pray for election workers, poll workers, and everyone helping to ensure people can vote. And we pray for voters: that each person may vote according to conscience and choose leaders who act with integrity, compassion, and justice.

Amen.
